Untamed frequencies. That's the thought I kept having as I watched the film MHz (Megahertz) and prepared to record a score for it. The film is about a self-destructive radio DJ who encounters Nikola Tesla in the afterlife, and the ways they help each other work through the tattered energies of their lives.

"Think Brian Eno," I was told. Delightful. I'd recently finished reading 'Brian Eno: His Music and the Vertical Color of Sound' and was itching to try something different (I'm usually writing silly pop songs on the acoustic guitar). Coaxing melodies from tones and noises like a child persuading magic from his chemistry set...it isn't always very pretty, and indeed often quite messy, but it's an incredible mix of fun and frustration.

Hopefully the music will fare well enough without the images that go along with it, but that's a tall order. At any rate, I'm a fan of documentation and wanted to at least make it available for those who might have an interest. It was all recorded at home - as is everything I do - and while I tried to make it easy on the ears, I often left much of the mix to chance, just like life and electricity...and untamed frequencies.
